Overview

The School's subscription to online journals such as PROLA only gives access to computers on the DIAS network. In order to access the journals you are entitled to while not on campuss, a machine on the DIAS network has been configured to relay requests on behalf of machines which are not. To prevent anyone in the world accessing the journals (and using our fairly limited bandwidth!), the proxy will require a username and password before allowing access.

Setting it up

Step 1: Get a username and password. (Send a mail to the sysadmin)
Step 2: In your web-browser, set the http proxy to proxy.stp.dias.ie, port 8000.
Step 3: See if it works.

Setting up different browsers

MozillaGo to Preferences, Advanced, and then Proxies, choose "Manual Proxy Configuration" and fill in the first row with proxy.stp.dias.ie and 8000
OperaI don't have easy access to a copy of Opera right now... If you're using Opera, and get this to work, please tell me, and I'll update the page. If you can't get it to work, ask the sysadming for advice.
KonquerorGo to Settings, Configure Konqueror, scroll down and choose Proxy, select "Use proxy" and "Manually specifed settings", then click "Setup..." (across from "Manually specified settings").
In the first row, fill in http://proxy.stp.dias.ie, and 8000. Note that you must give the http:// bit of the address, unlike most other browsers.
Internet ExplorerGo to Tools, Internet Options, then choose the "Connections" tab, and "LAN Settings". Tick "Use a proxy server" and fill in the boxes with proxy.stp.dias.ie and 8000.

Problems?

My password doesn't work for any of the websitesThe password isn't for the journals! The password is for our proxy, which will fetch the pages on your behalf. Please set up the proxy as given above!
Konqueror won't accept the proxy setting.Make sure you stated "http://proxy.stp.dias.ie rather than just proxy.stp.dias.ie
I don't get asked for a password, nothing works, and I wasn't using a proxyMake sure the name of the proxy is exactly as given above, and that the port is 8000.
I don't get asked for a password, and nothing works! If you were already using a proxy, and can't browse the web without it, then you may be out of luck. Mention "transparent proxy" to the sysadmin of the network your computer is on.
It's slow!Sadly, yes. The link to Burlington Road is asymmetric - fast inbound (4Mbit/sec) and slow outbound (256Kbit/sec). External users downloading via Burlington hit the slow leg on the way out.
Something else is wrongOkay, it could be that something is broken and you're the first to notice. Please report it.
