Logging in: ssh

External access to the School's computer systems is normally via ssh to lewis.stp.dias.ie. Ssh clients are standard components of Unix, Linux and MacOS X, and free clients such as Putty, exist for MS Windows.

When logging in, before you give your username and password details, you need some proof that the remote machine is what it claims to be. Typically, the client presents you with a cryptographic fingerprint of the actual remote machine, and ask you to accept or reject it. But how are you supposed to know (or remember!) the right fingerprint?

File access: sftp, scp, rsync

Only lewis is directly accessible from the outside. The old ftp and rcp commands are disabled, replaced by sftp and scp respectively. The rsync command will only work if tunnelled over ssh (e.g. rsync -e ssh).
