Overview

The School's computer system is based on Linux, a mix of diskless terminals and workstations. Each visitor is normally given a terminal and an account on the computer system. An envelope containing login details and basic information to get you started should either be with the Secretary, or on your desk. If this has not happened, please ask in Room 302, or failing that, ask the School Secretary.

During a conference, rather than create accounts for all attendees, general-access terminals are installed in the lecture room. If you would prefer an account though, just ask.

By default, visitor accounts are closed a few weeks after departure. If you expect to return to the Institute in the future, and would like the account to remain open in the meantime, just make sure to notify the system administrator.

Presentations

There is an overhead projector, an LCD projector for computer display, and a laptop PC can be provided. However, to avoid any nasty last-minute surprises, please note the following:
  • Let us know in advance what software you'll need, and when your presentation is.
  • The laptop has a USB port, a CD-ROM drive, but no 3.5" floppy drive. Transfer is possible via a workstation, but obviously, this needs to be done ahead of time!

Bringing a Laptop (... and your adapter for UK plugs, please!)

If so configured, your laptop will auto-discover the network settings (i.e. DHCP). If this isn't the case, or it Just Doesn't Work, please contact the administrator (Room 302, extension 132) and ask for help.

Bringing files

We suggest bringing files on CD or on USB flash disk, or pulling them directly across the Internet once you arrive. Transfer via 3.5" floppies is possible, subject to the usual reliability problems. Note that this is a Unix-style system. If you are only familiar with DOS, you may wish to look at how to access removable devices under Unix here.

If you have any questions, ask the sysadmin (webmaster@stp.dias.ie).
